Abstract

This research analyzes the interaction between high school students and digital social networks through the lens of Ausubel's Meaningful Learning Theory in a rural school in the commune of Arauco, Chile. The study addresses the persistent gap between traditional pedagogical practices and students' daily digital lives in the post-pandemic era. A mixed-methods approach with a descriptive-transversal design and inductive scope was used, employing a case study at the Liceo Bicentenario Filidor Gaete Monsalve. The sample included 60 students for a quantitative phase (digital survey) and 10 for a qualitative phase (semi-structured interviews). The results reveal high connectivity levels (93%) and a strong preference for platforms such as TikTok and Instagram, with daily consumption exceeding 8 hours in most cases. Although entertainment is the primary function (78%), a significant valuation of "learning" as a functionality emerges (60-71%), especially through visual micro-content and algorithmic self-management strategies. The study concludes that there is an underutilized pedagogical potential in social media logics; however, risks of anxiety and lack of self-regulation persist. The study recommends a transition from prohibition toward didactic innovation that emulates visual synthesis and digital immediacy, positioning the teacher as a critical mediator in the rural digital ecosystem.
