Training researchers in the era of cognitive capitalism: comparative perspective on scientific capabilities worldwide

Training researchers in Latin America and the Caribbean involves a global comparative analysis of structural dynamics vis-à-vis other continental regions and the context of cognitive capitalism. This analysis relies on structural indicators—such as "researchers per million inhabitants" (WDI/UNESCO/UIS), publication counts, patent applications, and advanced human capital formation (doctoral level)—alongside the impact factor of academic productivity and innovation potential. The objective is to analyze the challenges arising from the tension between global scientific evaluation standards and the specific characteristics of researcher training systems in Latin America and the Caribbean, using an international comparison based on indicators of research density and distribution across fields of knowledge (Escobar Chacón, 2018). The study employs a comparative approach that is documentary, descriptive, and interpretive. The results indicate that, while established scientific systems prevail in academic cultures with ambitious standards—where cognitive capitalism aligns with economic trends favoring neoliberal policies—hybrid systems are emerging in Latin America and the Caribbean. These systems represent a convergence of global demands for visibility and local commitments to situated knowledge and social relevance. Consequently, the development of research skills takes place in a space that constantly negotiates between scientific productivity and the educational purpose appropriate to specific fields of knowledge. The study concludes that these dynamics should understood as expressions of the distinct trajectories taken by institutions rather than as structural deficiencies. Emerging experiences focused on humanizing scientific training are evident; thus, Latin America and the Caribbean offer original perspectives on researcher training—not only within globalized contexts but also through the lenses of ethics and scientific excellence.
