The “Fundamental Split” as an Ontological Model: Notes on Marcuse’s Encounter with Heidegger

This paper proposes the hypothesis that a philosophically relevant understanding of Herbert Marcuse's encounter with the philosophy of Martin Heidegger can be articulated through the analytical reconstruction of the “fundamental split” as an ontological model. From here it becomes possible to understand the closeness and effective distance that Marcuse maintained with Heidegger between 1928 and 1933: referring ontologically to the “fundamental split” as an ontological model it is possible to show sufficiently the distance between Marcuse's ontology of real possibility and Heidegger's own ontology of formally indicated possibility.
