Abstract

The study of educational problems from a comparative perspective requires a theoretical-methodological framework capable of transcending nationalist views and understanding the complexity of educational phenomena across diverse sociocultural contexts. This article aims to analyze the theoretical foundations and methodological procedures of comparative education, drawing on classical authors such as Marx, Weber, and Durkheim, as well as contemporary contributions by Ragin, Schriewer, and Bereday. Methodologically, the study is based on documentary research, characterized by an exhaustive review of primary and secondary sources on comparative methodology and its contributions to the educational field. As a result, this study proposes a preliminary methodological approach for addressing educational problems comparatively. Thus, it is argued that comparison is not reducible to a mere juxtaposition of data or description of differences and similarities, but rather constitutes a complex analytical operation oriented toward establishing relationships among variables. Based on the mirror metaphor proposed by Hartog and nuanced by Tejeda, this paper discusses both the opportunities and the ethnocentric risks of the comparative method within the Latin American context. A classification of comparative studies is presented according to their subject, area, nature, and direction, alongside a proposed sequence of methodological stages integrating description, interpretation, juxtaposition, and comparison. The main challenges facing researchers are also addressed, including difficulties in accessing foreign sources, lack of data comparability, and ethnocentric bias. The article concludes that when exercised with rigor and critical awareness, comparative methodology serves as an indispensable tool for understanding contemporary educational problems and for formulating hypotheses amenable to international contrast.
